A hungry catbird

A grey catbird in a tree with a berry in it's mouth

I'm really happy I was able to capture this photo. To be honest I'm not that big of a bird watcher nor do I know much about birds, but with that being said I find all birds very cute. I practically like big birds, but smalls ones are just as adorable. Here is a picture of a grey catbird with a berry in its mouth. I was very lucky that this little guy was so photogenic and was willing to hang out long enough that I could get my act together. I was just walking around in the woods when I spotted them, and I panicked trying to take my camera out of my bag. I was so worried that it would fly away that I started to plead with them not to move and asked it out loud to be nice. In hindsight that probably would have just made it fly away faster. In the end I was able to take quite a few photos before it flew away so it all worked out.

Now then here are some fun facts:

Grey Catbirds are named after the fact that they have a cat like call. In other words, there chirps can sometimes sound like "meow". There also called grey catbirds because they are grey. That last part is probably obvious.

Grey Catbird can be aggressive when it comes to guarding their nest. Despite their small stature they have no problem going up against bigger predators. One time I saw one of these little guys attacking a cat who had been hanging around nearby a nest. The fight didn't last for very long since the cat just decided to walk away. I thought I would add this because I found it very symbolic.

Grey Catbirds belong to the genus Dumetella which translates to "small thicket" which is where you'll have the best luck finding them. Though personally I tend to find them by berry bushes which makes sense since berries are a big part of their food source.

I think it is important for me to mention the fact that I'm not a hundred percent sure that this is in fact a Grey Catbird (Like I said, I'm not a bird expert) so I'm going to look really silly if I'm wrong. Let's just hope I'm right, :D
